New figures show overnight stays in hotels and motels reached a record high in January.
Statistics New Zealand says the 4.4 million guest nights recorded is the highest number since the accommodation survey began nearly 14 years ago.
The survey measured the number of people staying in hotels, motels, backpackers, and holiday parks.
Total overnight stays were up 4%, to 4.4%, from 0.4% the previous January.
The number of overseas visitors jumped 8%, about the same as a couple of years ago, while domestic travellers increased 2%.
The Waikato region led the rise with a 10% increase in overnight stays.
The only region to record fewer guest nights was Taranaki/Manawatu-Whanganui, which was down by 5%.
The New Zealand Hotel Council says the numbers are a cause for cautious optimism in the industry.
