Microsoft's first quarter profit has jumped by more than half, thanks to more sales of its flagship Windows and Office software, and the launch of the latest blockbuster Halo video game.

The US software giant made $US5.4 billion in the three months to September.

Revenues rose by a quarter to a record $16.2 billion.

Sales of its Windows software rose 66%, while Office and other business software brought in 14% more.
