Briscoe Group says aggressive marketing has boosted full year sales, but warns the retail sector remains extremely competitive.

The company, which owns the Briscoes, Living and Giving and Rebel Sports chains, made sales of $419 million in the year to the end of January, slightly ahead of the previous year.

Sales at stores open more than a year were 2.4% higher than in the previous year, with sporting goods sales rising more than 3%, and homewares rising 2%.

Briscoe Group's managing director, Rod Duke, says despite disappointing sales on Boxing Day, trading during the final few months of the year was extremely pleasing.

Mr Duke says he expects the retail sector to remain competitive in the coming year.

The Group expects to make a full year profit of more than $23 million, an increase of 10% on the previous year.
