Highest close for nearly 3 years by NZX

The New Zealand share market is at its highest level for almost three years.

The NZX gained more than 30 points on Wednesday and closed up almost 1%, at over 3558 on turnover of $106 million.

John Porteous of Craigs Investment Partners says it's a sign that investors are becoming more confident of the outlook for the economy.

He says it's partly because New Zealand tracks overseas markets, which have been performing well.

But Mr Porteous also says the profitability of companies in this country has been steady and the good dividends and profits paid to investors, mean shares are an attractive option.

And he says the amount New Zealanders are saving is positive, as there is money for companies to invest.

The Australian 200 index was up 43 points, or 0.9%, at 4769.
