Microsoft has reported a 6% rise in quarterly profits.
The company said on Thursday that net income for the three months to the end of September was $US5.74 billion compared with $US5.41 billion in the same period last year.
The results were helped by strong sales of its Office software package and a small increase in sales of Windows operating systems.
Microsoft reported record quarterly revenue of $US17.4 billion.
However, the BBC reports Microsoft shares fell 0.5% to $US26.87 in after-hours trading as the profit figures failed to impress investors.
Microsoft now has cash holdings of $US57 billion, most of which is held overseas. Apple Inc on Tuesday reported it has $US81 billion in cash.
