Offshore markets up

Stocks on Wall St have jumped after manufacturing in the United States grew at the fastest pace in seven months in January.

The Dow Jones Index on Wednesday rose 140 points to 12,773 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 38 points at 2852.

In Europe: FTSE 100 in London rose 1.9%, DAX in Frankfurt was up 2.4% and the CAC 40 in Paris was up 2.1%.

The Nikkei in Tokyo was up 7 points to 8810.

The Australian market was down 37 points to 4226 and the NZX 50 was up 6 points to 3302.

At 8.15am on Thursday the New Zealand dollar was trading at 83.26 US cents, 77.74 Australian cents, 52.56 pence, 63.44 yen and 0.6322 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 72.97.

Brent crude oil was trading at $US112.08 per barrel and gold was trading at $US1746.36 per ounce.
