Public given chance for last look at cathedral

Cantabrians are being offered a final chance to view ChristChurch cathedral before it is demolished.

The building's owner, the Anglican Church, has decided the city's most enduring symbol is beyond saving and intends to demolish all but the bottom two to three metres of the 130-year-old building.

The public is being offered the chance to get up close to the cathedral for two weekends, beginning this weekend.

Access to the square was granted last year so people could get an idea of the damage the building sustained in the February 2011 earthquake and in subsequent aftershocks. Some 110,000 people took advantage of that offer.
