A supermarket in north Christchurch has been forced to close its doors for urgent earthquake strengthening.

Countdown Northwood says it shut the supermarket within hours of receivingan engineers' report, late on Thursday afternoon.

The managing director of Countdown, Dave Chambers, said the report identified the need for urgent repairs and the store was instructed to close immediately.

The company says staff will be taken on at other supermarkets until the repairs are complete.

The strengthening work is expected to take less than four days.
