A Christchurch band rotunda has been added to the city's list of historic buildings to be demolished because of earthquake damage.

The Thomas Edmonds band rotunda on Cambridge Terrace, which is listed as a protected place in the Christchurch city plan, has been labelled dangerous.

The rotunda suffered structural and land damage during the February 2011 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks.

A spokesperson for the city council says engineers will salvage as much of the building as possible and its rebuild will be considered in due course.

Demolition is expected to take two weeks.
