A Christchurch institution, the video store Alice in Videoland, reopened on Saturday for the first time since the earthquake of 22 February last year.
The High Street shop - the second central-city business to reopen, after Ballantynes department store - is surrounded by cordoned-off buildings and demolition sites.
Alice in Videoland director Jeremy Stewart says the store is in a former post office built following the Napier earthquake in the 1930s and it's one of the sturdiest buildings in the city.
A cafe is due to open on the ground floor of the building in May and there are plans for a 39-seat theatre.
Mr Stewart says the reopening represents a slice of normality for people and shows the store's commitment to the CBD.
