Cafe and customers refusing to leave

A Christchurch cafe and its customers are continuing to use a building despite a warning it needs to be demolished due to earthquake damage.

Jennifer Black, the owner of Blax Cafe in Montreal Street, has been told by her landlord that an engineer's report shows the building has to come down but she is fighting that decision.

She believes the building is safe and has engaged her own engineer to carry out a check.

She has put up a sign warning customers of the landlord's report, but says people haven't been put off.

One customer, Sandra Shaw, said she believes many safe buildings are being pulled down and is happy to be in the cafe.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says it hasn't received the engineer's report on the building so can't make a judgement on it.
