Most of Christchurch's Queen Elizabeth II athletic stadium is to be demolished.
Announcing the demolition on Wednesday, the Christchurch City Council said earthquake damage had made the complex too dangerous.
The council's general manager of community services, Michael Aitken, says the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority has served a notice of demolition on the council.
Mr Aitken says the main stadium building, the covered stand and the north and south open stands will all be demolished because they are considered to be dangerous buildings.
He says the timeline for the demolition has yet to be confirmed.
The notice does not include the 50m pool, which is in a separate building but on the same site; however, a recent engineering report shows it too is significantly damaged.
The council is considering developing a multi-sport hub in the city centre, which would include a leisure facility and athletic track on the QEII site, or another site to the east.
