Damaged trees to be removed

Work will begin on Monday on removing up to 1000 damaged trees that deemed unsafe in South New Brighton.

Christchurch City Council says the trees in the Bridge reserve deteriorated over the summer and the council has no option but to remove them.

Greenspace manager Alan Beuzenberg says the felling is likely to cause ground vibrations, but contractors will take care to minimise the effects of the work.

Some of the trees will be left along the estuary for nesting and to maintain wildlife habitat.

The work is expected to be finished by late June.
