The Christchurch tramway could be open again by the end of the year if major demolitions are finished on time in the central city.
Wood Scenic Line managing director Michael Esposito says the trams and tracks suffered minor damage during the February 2011 earthquake and will take only three or four months to repair.
But the central city plan needs to be signed off and several demolition projects have to be completed before it is safe to run the trams again.
Mr Esposito says the demolition of Clarendon Tower is expected to take the longest, with January its current deadline.
He says the trams could start operating in December if the building is made safe by then.
