Hagley Park sports centre suggested

Sport Canterbury wants Christchurch's QE II sport centre rebuilt in Hagley Park.

The sports body has put forward the idea in a submission on the city council's draft central-city plan.

Chief executive Geoff Barry says nearly 1 million people a year used the QE II centre, which was built for the 1974 Commonwealth Games and must now be demolished because of earthquake damage.

Mr Barry says a pool and indoor recreational facility next to the existing Hagley Park netball courts would be ideal.

He says the proposal is not intended to polarise the community, but he expects it will ignite debate.

Submissions on the draft plan close at the end of May.
