Material from red zone wasted, says recycler

The manager of a recycling business in Christchurch is concerned about what he says is the waste of tonnes of recyclable material from the red-zoned central city.

5R Solutions, which recycles glass, is one of many companies trying to generate business in the aftermath of the Canterbury earthquakes.

Managing director Chris Grant says the residential deconstruction alone will produce 30,000 tonnes of glass.

However, he says tonnes of material is often being wasted by being sent straight to a landfill.

Mr Grant says bureaucracy and red tape are stopping broken glass being collected to be recycled into insulation batts that could eventually be used in the rebuild.
