Anderton urges cathedral protest rally

A former MP is calling for a popular protest against the Anglican Church's decision to pull down the ChristChurch Cathedral.

At a Christchurch City Council meeting on Thursday, councillors voted 10 to four in favour of asking for demolition of the cathedral to be halted.

Former Wigram MP Jim Anderton says the vote is a moral victory but says the Anglican Church is being arrogant over the issue and needs to be stopped.

He is organising what he calls a mass revolt on 26 May in Christchurch's Cranmer Square.

Mr Anderton says Cantabrians need to turn out in their thousands to get the Government's attention.
