Two chances to inspect CTV building missed

The Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission was told on Monday two separate chances to inspect the Canterbury Television building were missed before it collapsed during the February 2011 earthquake, killing 115 people.

The commission has been told that after the September 2010 quake, an engineer recommended a major structural wall be inspected further, but that wasn't done.

After the Boxing Day aftershock, the building again was not assessed by an engineer because of a labour shortage in the city during the Christmas break.

CTV building property manager John Drew says he tried to get hold of the engineering firm that had assessed the building after the September shake, but because it was the holidays, no one was there.
