High Court action on cathedral imminent

A group trying to save the Christ Church Cathedral is expected to file documents in the High Court on Tuesday in a bid to stop it from being demolished.

The Great Christchurch Buildings Trust is taking the action after receiving advice that legislation protecting the church buildings could be being breached.

The trust says that under the legislation the Anglican Church is obliged to repair and maintain the cathedral.

A spokesperson for the trust told Radio New Zealand it was planning to file the legal action on Tuesday.

The Anglican Church's Cathedral Project Group, which has been looking at options for the cathedral, says it is disappointed by the action and is standing by the building's demolition order.
