Coastal pathway planned for Christchurch

Planning is taking place in Christchurch for a coastal-pathway stretching from Sumner Beach to Ferrymead.

The Christchurch City Council announced on Thursday it will help the community group responsible for the 6km pathway by managing the project for the beginning stages and providing $50,000 of funding.

The Christchurch Coastal Pathway Group says the path will connect earthquake-damaged communities and allow people to make the most of the area's dramatic and varied coastline.

The council says a landscape architect has been commissioned to carry out the first part of the design and will outline how the plan can cause minimum disturbance to the environment.

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says the pathway will cater for children, pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, wheelchairs and skateboarders.
