The Government says more than 6000 Cantabrians with earthquake-damaged land have now signed deals to sell their property to the Crown.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says of nearly 8000 property owners with land in the residential red zone, 6090 have agreed to move to safer land.

Mr Brownlee says 4775 of those have already been paid out at a cost of $947 million.

About 50 Government offers are being accepted each week, he says.

The deadline for the majority of the offers is April next year.
