Christchurch was shaken by a small, shallow earthquake on Wednesday night.
The magnitude 3.8 quake occurred about 9.40pm and was centred 5km south-west of the city at a depth of 6km.
A Radio New Zealand reporter in the city says it was a short, sharp quake which shook the building she was working in.
No damage has been reported.
