Education Minister Hekia Parata is in Christchurch this week to continue meeting schools affected by proposed closures and mergers.

Ms Parata last week visited 12 schools that are facing being closed or merged with another school, and this week she will see the remaining 23 schools.

The Ministry of Education says a focus this week will be on consultation over a cluster school in the suburb of Aranui, where three primary schools, an intermediate and a high school could be merged into one.

Deputy secretary for regional operations Katrina Casey says such single-site schools allow for resources and specialist staff to be pooled.

Ms Casey says the site could also include a dental clinic, social worker and doctor's surgery.

The ministry will hold a series of design forums over the coming month for school communities to put forward ideas about what the new schools could look like.
