A joint venture with the University of Canterbury and the largest English language school in Australia is expected to help boost Christchurch's depleted international student population.

Navitas, which is based in Perth, will establish a new department at the university offering a number of programmes, including commerce and engineering, to recruit and prepare international students for study at the university.

Navitas was selected through a tender process to establish the new college, which will open in the second half of this year.

International student numbers at the university have fallen drastically since the earthquakes.
