Plan outlined to make cathedral safe

An engineer has outlined a plan to a Christchurch City Council committee on how the Anglican Cathedral can be made safe and restored.

The Great Christchurch Building Trust commissioned the report which was presented to the council's Community, Recreation and Culture Committee on Tuesday morning.

Engineer, Adam Thornton of Dunning Thornton Consultants said a heavy duty scaffold system could be constructed outside the cathedral and slid into the building.

He said the scaffold frame would keep workers safe while they removed artefacts and began the restoration process.

The trust said the process is likely to cost around $6- $8 million.

The committee asked the trust and cathedral representatives to meet at the end of March to discuss the plan.
