Stopgap accountability measures due soon

Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson is expecting answers very soon from engineering organisations about how to improve the accountability of engineers.

Both the Institution of Professional Engineers and the Chartered Professional Engineers Council have told the Government they are powerless to take action in response to the CTV building collapse, which killed 115 people in the earthquake in February 2011.

Mr Williamson, summoned both bodies to a meeting at Parliament last month, after which he described them as toothless.

He expects to hear shortly about stopgap measures that can be taken.

Mr Williamson says legislation might be needed to enable sanctions in future cases.
