Work to repair the Bridge of Remembrance in Christchurch will start next week and is is expected to take about 18 months to complete.

Christchurch City Council says it has given an undertaking to the Returned & Services Association that the site will be available in some form to mark the commemoration in August 2014 of the beginning of World War I.

The bridge was structurally damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and detailed examinations show it needs extensive technical repairs.
