The Earthquake Commission's home repair programme has hit the half-way mark, with the completion of repairs to 40,000 damaged houses.

Repairs are needed to another 40,000 houses.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee said completed repair jobs are running at 60 a day, involving about 1300 contracting firms and 5000 tradesmen.

He said the commission's partnership with Fletchers, which is managing the programme, has succeeded in constraining cost increases, while maintaining confidence in the Christchurch housing market.

Mr Brownlee said confidence in the city is high. Recent figures showed Christchurch had a net population gain of 2600 people last month, compared with a net loss of 2500 in May 2012.
