The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) says new, temporary accommodation in Christchurch should help reduce the number of homeless people going to the City Mission for help.
City Missioner Michael Gorman says his organisation is increasingly being approached by women with children who cannot find anywhere to rent or stay.
He says the Government needs to work with the council to provide more accommodation.
CERA chief executive Roger Sutton admits there is a housing problem in the city but says emergency housing has been built and more is being constructed.
He says Rangers Park in the suburb of Linwod has just opened up, offering 45 properties for people in need.
