A welfare centre set up in Kaiapoi for those unable to return to their homes in the wake of the earthquake, will remain open until Sunday.

The centre, at the local rugby club, had been due to close on Friday.

However, Waimakiriri District Council chief executive Jim Palmer told a public meeting on Thursday night that there is still a need for the centre and it will stay open over the weekend.

He said a recovery assistance centre will be set up in its place on Monday to provide any further help.
