Prime Minister John Key has called for a two-minute nationwide silence on Tuesday, one week on from the Christchurch earthquake

Mr Key spent Saturday in the city, meeting search and rescue workers and victims' families.

He says the earthquake may be New Zealand's single most tragic event, and has called on New Zealanders to stop and remember those who lost their lives, along with the hundreds who are mourning family and friends.

Mr Key says the Government will release an economic support package for Christchurch people on Monday.

He says many people have lost incomes and livelihoods, and Monday's package will provide them with interim support while longer-term measures are developed during the next month.
