The Tertiary Education Union says universities should not be advertising for students in Christchurch when the University of Canterbury is facing a drop in enrolments next year.

At least three of the six universities based outside Canterbury are advertising in the cityeven though the University of Canterbury expects to lose about 1500 students because of February's earthquake.

Union president Sandra Grey says there is no need for universities to recruit students from Christchurch.

The union says Christchurch students can study where ever they want, but tertiary institutions in other centres should show consideration for institutions that are going to struggle for the next few years.
