Christchurch drinking water chlorine-free again

For the first time since February's earthquake, the drinking water in Christchurch is completely chlorine-free.

For years the city has prized itself on the purity of its water.

But when the earthquake destroyed almost half of the underground water and sewer systems, Christchurch City Council put chlorine in the water supply to combat any contamination problems that might arise.

Mayor Bob Parker announced on Wednesday the last of the chlorine has been removed and the water is once again additive free.

Mr Parker says the water has been carefully checked and the quality is A1, meaning it is safe to drink.
