Demolition work on the Grand Chancellor Hotel in Christchurch remains suspended as an investigation continues into how a man fell several metres from the 24th floor on Friday.

The Fletcher Construction employee was in a critical condition in Christchurch hospital but his present condition is not known as his family has asked for complete privacy.

The company says a date to resume work has not been set.

It previously said work would not begin again until the safety of all workers could be assured.
