A Taranaki environmental group is calling for an end to landfarming in the province.
Landfarming is the practice of spreading oil and gas wastes onto marginal farmland to allow it to break down and later be resown with pasture.
The group - Climate Justice Taranaki - has told a South Taranaki District Plan hearing that the landfarms are in reality toxic waste disposal sites.
Under the proposed plan, landfarming is a permitted activity in the rural zone but the group believes it should not be allowed, especially not on food-producing land.
The group also opposes landfarming in the district's coastal protection area, and in significant water catchments and wetlands.
District plan hearings are due to finish next in July.
