Lawn bowls silver for Smith

New Zealander Val Smith has won silver in the lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games.

Smith was beaten by England's Natalie Melmore in the final of the women's singles.

Melmore won the first set 7-6 and the second set 11-2.

Smith had secured her spot in the final with a tie-break win in her semi-final against Australia's Kelsey Cottrell.

She held on to win a tight first set 9-7, before losing the second 8-4 to Cottrell.

But the former world champion put in a solid first two ends in the tie-break to win it 4-3 and cement a place in the final.

The Nelson player made a terrible start to the tournament, losing four of her first six matches, but then won six matches in a row.

Smith was the only New Zealand bowler to make the medal round and admits she got there via the back door, but feels her experience probably helped in the end.

Cottrell took the bronze medal.

Forsyth out

The men's player, Ali Forsyth, lost his play-off to Australia's Leif Selby.

Forsyth looked in good form at the start of the match, and won the first set 11-2.

But Selby came back to take the second 13-1, and then won the tie-break 4-3 to beat Forsyth into the semi-final clash against Northern Ireland's Gary Kelly.
