Labour defends welfare pamphlet

7:39 pm on 21 November 2011

Labour Party leader Phil Goff is defending its pamphlet featuring a photo of a baby and the words "under National you won't be around to celebrate her first birthday".

Mr Goff says the pamphlet sent to mothers on welfare is hard-hitting, but not misleading, as the mother of a one-year-old child may be required to work under National's policy.

The pamphlet is being criticised by National-aligned bloggers, including Kiwiblog's David Farrar who describes it as insulting and denigrating of working mothers.

But Mr Goff says National needs to explain where the jobs are for young mothers and is comfortable with the content of the pamphlet.
