More than 230k votes already cast in 2017 election

The number of New Zealanders casting early ballots continues to rise after four days of advance voting.

The latest figures from the Electoral Commission shows that 74,214 voters headed to the polling booths yesterday.

The tally has continued to climb for every day of advance voting. Thursday's votes were up 7500 on Wednesday's count.

Almost 230,000 people have now already voted in the 2017 general election.

At the same time last election, 147,560 people had voted, even with advance voting opening several days earlier in 2014.
