A Wellington City councillor believes interesting discussions lie ahead between the capital's new left-leaning mayor and the National-led Government.
Celia Wade-Brown was elected to the top office on Wednesday, beating the incumbent Kerry Prendergast by 176 votes following the counting of special votes.
Ms Wade-Brown, a Green Party member, campaigned on issues of environmentally-friendly transport and technology.
She strongly opposes a roading flyover at the Basin Reserve.
However, returning city councillor Andy Foster says the mayor's position does not square with the roading priorities of central government.
Mr Foster says the coming three-year mayoral term will generate interesting discussions between Ms Wade-Brown and the Government.
