Men's tennis was played at the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896, but withdrawn from the programme after the 1924 Paris Games. It was re-introduced at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and included a women's tournament.

New Zealand's only tennis player to win an Olympic medal is Anthony Wilding, who took bronze in the men's singles event at the 1912 Stockholm Games.

WOMEN'S SINGLES

In 2008, Croatia-born Marina Erakovic became just the sixth tennis player to represent New Zealand at the Olympics, reaching the round of 32.

Erakovic will again compete in the women's singles event in London, and in doing so becomes the first New Zealand tennis player to compete in two Olympic Games.

The 24-year-old is currently ranked 47th in the world, but last year defeated top player Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus, who was ranked fourth at the time.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee selected Erakovic on the basis that she is capable of reaching the top 16.
