The martial arts sport, Taekwondo, became an official Olympic medal sport at the 2000 Sydney Games.

New Zealand sent its first competitor to the Athens Games in 2004, where Verina Wihongi Wihongi competed in the under 57kg category and placed ninth.

Three athletes will represent New Zealand at the London Olympics.

Korean-born Robin Cheong is competing in her second Games, after finishing seventh in the under 57kg class in Beijing in 2008.

Cheong, 23, will compete in the same weight division in London and is currently ranked 11th in world standings.

Logan Campbell will compete in the men's under 68kg event, in which he is currently ranked 12th. The 26-year-old competed in the same division at the Beijing Games, where he finished in the top 16.

The London Games will be Vaughn Scott's first Olympics. The 22-year-old is currently ranked 18th in the world in the under 80kg division.
