New Zealand swimmer Hayley Palmer has failed to progress to the semi-finals of the women's 50m freestyle at the Olympics.
Palmer finished second in her heat with a time of 25.47 seconds.
However, the following three heats were swum in much faster times, leaving Palmer in 23rd place - well short of the top 16 finish needed to qualify for the next phase of the competition.
Ranomi Kromowidjojo from the Netherlands was the top qualifier in a time of 24.51 seconds.
The men's 100m medley relay team also failed to progress out of their heat on Friday.
Daniel Bell, Gareth Kean, Carl O'Donnell and Glenn Snyders finished fifth in the second of two heats.
The result put them in ninth place overall - one place out of a spot in ther final.
