New Zealand sailors make medal races

9:29 am on 4 August 2012

Two New Zealand crews are advancing to the medal races of their events at the Olympic sailing in London.

Dan Slater has placed ninth in the fleet after the initial ten races of the men's Finn event while Hamish Pepper and Jim Turner have placed eighth in the men's Star.

The top ten sailors in each event compete in the medal race on Sunday.

Both crews have consistently placed in the middle of the fleet throughout the regatta, with just one race win each - both in Race 3.

Points from the medal race are added to the crews' current points tallies to determine the gold, silver and bronze medal winners.

The men's Laser event is also nearing its final stages, with Andrew Murdoch in ninth place after Race 8.

Eight races have also now been completed in the women's Laser Radial event, in which Sara Winther is sitting well out of medal race contention in 21stplace.

Jason Saunders and Paul Snow-Hansen are in eighth place in the Men's 470 after four races.

The women's 470 crew of Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie began their Olympic campaign with a second placing in Race 1 and a seventh placing in Race 2 to sit in second place in the standings of their event.

Men's 49er

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke had a good day in the men's 49er class, propelling them to second place.

Burling and Tuke closed the gap on the leading Australian boat, and gave themselves a 15 point buffer on the third placed Finnish team, scoring a seventh, second and then winning the final race of the day.

They go into the lay day with just four races remaining before the top 10 competitors progress to the double point medal round.

The RS:X Boardsailing and Women's Match Racing resume on Saturday, which is a rest day for the Finn, Star and 49ers.
