Black Sticks lose semi thriller against Netherlands

The New Zealand's women's hockey side will play for the bronze medal at the London Olympics after losing a thrilling semifinal to the Netherlands.

The Black Sticks were tied 2-2 with the Dutch at the end of regular time at Riverbank Arena on Wednesday.

The teams then had to play 14 minutes of extra time, but the match was only decided after a penalty shootout, which the Netherlands won 3-1.

Black Sticks captain Kayla Sharland opened the scoring in the 7th minute from a penalty corner and the New Zealanders led until just before half-time when Maartje Paumen levelled the score, also off a penalty corner.

In the second half, Krystal Forgesson pulled one back for New Zealand in the 49th minute, but they only held the lead for five minutes before Paumen scored again from a penalty.

New Zealander Katie Glynn had to be escorted off the field in the second half after being hit on the head by a Dutch player's stick, but was able to resume playing.

The Dutch showed their experience in the shootout, scoring off three of their five attempts with goals to Naomi van As, Eva de Gode and Ellen Hoog, while the Black Sticks struggled to get past the keeper and only Stacey Michelsen managed to convert her attempt.

Coach Greg Nicol says it was one of the best games the side has played and they need to play like that in the bronze play-off.

New Zealand have been the surprise package of the tournament, but lost to the Netherlands at the Champions Trophy earlier this year.

The Black Sticks will now play Great Britain, who were beaten 2-1 by Argentina on Wednesday, for the bronze.

Nicol says it is important that the team gets over the loss and refocus the next match.

No New Zealand women's hockey team has ever won a medal at an Olympics.
