7:00 am on 12 August 2012

Mexico have beaten Brazil 2-1 to win the gold medal in the men's football at the London Olympics.

Brazil were the overwhelming favourites going into the match.

Mexico scored the first goal just a minute into the match and were 1-0 up at halftime.

Half an hour into the second half they extended their lead to 2-0.

Both Mexico's goals were scored by Oribe Peralta.

Brazil's Hulk scored in injury time, but it was too late to level the match and Brazil took the silver for the third time.

In the bronze medal match, Korea beat Japan 2-0.

New Zealand did not make it out of the first round of the competition, finishing last in their pool.
