Golden double for rhythmic gymnast

Evgeniya Kanaeva of Russia on Saturday become the first rhythmic gymnast to win back-to-back individual Olympic gold medals.

Kanaeva, 22, who holds 17 world titles, produced four routines full of grace and charm to win the title with 116.900 points.

She received four standing ovations amid cries of "Bravo, Bravo" at Wembley Arena which was awash with Russian flags.

Daria Dmitrieva of Russia was second and Liubou Charkashyna of Belarus won the bronze.

It was Russia's fourth successive Olympic victory in this event. Yulia Barsukova won in 2000 and Alina Kabaeva in 2004.

Former Soviet states have won every individual medal in the event since 1996.
