Police meet community leaders over series of arsons

Police in Christchurch have met Aranui community leaders over safety concerns following a spate of late night arsons in the eastern suburbs.

More than 30 fires have been lit in the past three weeks, seven of them early on Sunday morning in the Aranui and Wainoni areas. Of the latest fires, two were in occupied properties.

Police discussed safety measures with the Aranui Community Trust and a community patrol group on Tuesday.

Trust chairman Rob Davidson said that although people are becoming more alarmed, they are now extra vigilant.

He said the community watch group is increasing its patrols and the police investigation into a link between tagging and the arsons has been thorough.

Detective Sergeant Chris Power said on Monday that there was a significant risk of a homicide given many of the fires have been in areas of high-density housing.
