Police have recovered the body of a man at a rural property in Upper Hutt following an armed offenders squad callout.
Area commander Inspector Mike Hill said police were called to the house in Whitemans Valley Road in Silverstream after reports that a man had discharged a firearm about 1.30pm on Tuesday.
Mr Hill said police recovered the body of a 45-year-old man on the driveway. No one else was found at the property.
Police are investigating the circumstances, but are not seeking anyone else.
Mangaroa School, about 3km away, was advised of the incident and a police spokesperson believed that pupils had been sent home early.
