An 18-year-old man has been charged with arson after two houses near Motueka were destroyed by fire.
Fire officers were unable to save the neighbouring homes, at School Road, Riwaka, on Tuesday.
Police arrested a man soon afterwards who they said had previously lived in one of the houses.
The 18-year-old was appearing the Nelson District Court on Wednesday.
