New Zealand's population grew by 40,300 in the year to June to 4,268,600.
Statistics New Zealand says an increase of 35,600 in the population from births outstripping deaths, was the main contributor to the growth.
However, a fall in net migration means the growth in population is less than the previous year.
New Zealand gained a net 4,700 people from migration in the latest year, down from a net migration gain of 10,100 in the year to June 2007.
